Senior Drivers

Many older drivers limit their driving to a few familiar destinations; they want to go to the grocery store, the bank, church and their doctor.  They may not drive on the interstate and may avoid driving during rush hour.   These are self-limiting behaviors and may be appropriate to compensate for the effects of aging but they may not be enough to ensure safety.  There are several warning signs that can indicate that a driver would benefit from a driving evaluation.  They include

  • Doesn't observe signs, signals, or other traffic
  • Needs help or instructions from passengers
  • Slow or poor decisions
  • Easily frustrated or confused
  • Frequently gets lost, even in familiar areas
  • Inappropriate driving speeds (too fast or too slow)
  • Poor road position, or wide turns
  • Accidents or near misses

Friends, spouses and adult children may have observed problems with driving, unexplained dents and dings on the car or other changes in behavior.  Often those closest to the person have the most difficulty providing guidance and determining if it is time for the person to stop driving.  A driving evaluation allows an impartial professional to assist the client, family and physician in determining if it is safe for that person to continue to drive, if they can drive with restrictions or if modifications such as adaptive equipment would allow them to continue to drive safely.
Our senior screening is tailored to the special needs of this population
